Czocha Castle

Czocha Castle is one of the most picturesque places in Poland. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when it was built as a mighty fortress by Czech knights. Origins

: Czocha Castle was built between 1241 and 1247 by order of the Czech king Wenceslas I. Initially, it served as a border watchtower, aiming to defend the Czech lands against invaders. Its strategic location on a rocky hill made it difficult to conquer.

Renaissance modifications

: In the 14th century work began on building the castle in Gothic style. By that time Czocha Castle had already acquired much of its present form. It was a typical defensive castle, serving a defensive and administrative function in the region. Over time, the castle was expanded and modified to meet changing needs. In the 16th century, the castle underwent a profound transformation. The owners, wishing to adapt it to Renaissance trends, transformed the fortress into a residence. Many decorative elements were added at that time, such as sculptures, coats of arms and frescoes, which adorn the walls to this day. 

Different hands, different fates

: Over the centuries, Czocha Castle passed from hand to hand. It was owned by various noble families, including the von Nostitz, von Wallenberg and von Klinckowström families. Each of the owners introduced certain modifications, aiming to adapt the castle to their needs and tastes.

World War II

: During the Second World War, the castle became a refuge for German troops. During this period, many valuable collections and artefacts were taken away or destroyed. After the end of the war, the castle was taken over by the Polish state.

Post-war times

: After the war, between 1945 and 1952, a primary school for the children of repatriates from the eastern territories functioned in the castle. The building then served as a holiday resort for many years. It was not until the 1990s that a major renovation was undertaken to restore the castle to its former glory.

Today

: After many years of restoration, Czocha Castle has become one of the highlights on the tourist map of Poland. Its walls conceal not only a rich history, but also many mysteries and legends that attract crowds of visitors.
